Charly Triballeau | AFP | Getty ImagesBillionaire donors like Robert Kraft and Leon Cooperman are weighing their support for Columbia University amid rising campus tensions over pro-Palestinian protests. "Columbia is grateful to Mr. Kraft for his years of generosity and service to Columbia," a Columbia spokesperson said in a statement to CNBC. Cooperman and Kraft so far, represent a minority of wealthy Columbia University donors who are speaking out on the protests. CNBC reached out to half a dozen foundations listed by Columbia University as having given at least $1 million to the school since 2014. Testifying before the same panel on Wednesday, she readily agreed with Republicans’ premise that pro-Palestinian activism at Columbia is shot through with anti-Jewish bigotry, and explained how, under her leadership, Columbia is cracking down. Fifteen students, she said, had been suspended, and six more were on disciplinary probation. If it had been up to her, she said, the stridently anti-Zionist professor Joseph Massad would never have gotten tenure. (Columbia later confirmed that his chairmanship was scheduled to end after this semester.) By bending over backward to be agreeable, Shafik emerged from the four-hour grilling largely unscathed.

That would mark a milestone for the company, which launched Disney+ on Nov. 12, 2019. It would be the first time Disney showed it can make money from Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+. Disney will need to sustain and grow streaming profit to justify Iger's five-year-old strategy to go "all in" on the segment. Disney has already offered ESPN+, a sports streaming service that has some but not all of ESPN's content. Trian Partners' Nelson Peltz, who failed to join Disney's board Wednesday after securing just 31% of the vote, publicly questioned what he has called Disney's "woke" content strategy.

CNN —The president and board chairs of Columbia University have agreed to testify next month at a Congressional hearing on campus antisemitism. The House Education and Workforce Committee announced Monday it will hold a hearing on April 17 featuring Columbia President Minouche Shafik and the two co-chairs of the board of trustees: Claire Shipman and David Greenwald. The Columbia president declined the invitation due to a scheduling conflict, according to the Columbia Spectator. Last month, the House Education Committee widened its campus antisemitism investigation to include Columbia and demanded the Ivy League school turn over a wide range of documents to aid that probe. Shai Davidai, an assistant professor at the Columbia Business School, called Shafik a “coward” in a fiery speech last year criticizing the university president for failing to quiet “pro-terror” voices at the school.

Sean Bailey, the longtime president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, has decided to step down, amid investor pressure to reverse Disney’s box office cold streak. Instead, at least in the near term, he will produce a new “Tron” movie for Disney. Mr. Greenbaum has been running the Searchlight division with Matthew Greenfield since 2021. Over that time, Disney has been roiled by executive firings, restructuring efforts and shifting strategies for film distribution. The steady-handed Mr. Bailey, who is popular with stars and their agents, has helped provide stability.

Monday’s Supreme Court showdown in NetChoice v. Paxton and Moody v. NetChoice will determine whether states can forbid social media companies from blocking or removing user content that goes against platform rules. The Florida and Texas laws are broadly written, but officials from both states say the laws will keep social media sites from unfairly silencing conservatives. Social media platforms have insisted for years that they don’t discriminate against right-wing speech. It also allows individual social media users to sue platforms if they believe they have been unfairly censored or “deplatformed.”Florida Gov. Well, when a landlord doesn't lower the rent to get a new retail tenant, it's because that landlord can't. They're free to renegotiate or refinance the terms of mortgages, given the extraordinary downturn facing retail storefronts. And the future will be full of even higher vacancy rates, higher interest rates, and lower rents. Retail rents have flattened, she says, but the construction of retail space has not. Still, from an urban-planning standpoint, the way we finance retail space makes no sense.

David Greenfield, a psychologist and founder of the Center for Internet and Technology Addiction in West Hartford, Conn., said the devices lure users with some powerful tactics. One is “intermittent reinforcement,” which creates the idea that a user could get a reward at any time. As with a slot machine, users are beckoned with lights and sounds but, even more powerful, information and reward tailored to a user’s interests and tastes. “They’re all about impulse and not a lot about the control of that impulse,” Dr. Greenfield said of young consumers. Moreover, he said, the adolescent brain is especially attuned to social connections, and “social media is all a perfect opportunity to connect with other people.”Meta responded to the lawsuit by saying that it had taken many steps to support families and teenagers.

Days after the Israel-Hamas war erupted last weekend, social media platforms like Meta , TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) received a stark warning from a top European regulator to stay vigilant about disinformation and violent posts related to the conflict. In that case, the AGs argued that the Biden administration was overly coercive in its suggestions to social media companies that they remove such posts. In the U.S., "we can't have government officials leaning on social media platforms and telling them, 'You really should be looking at this more closely. Under the DSA, large online platforms must have robust procedures for removing hate speech and disinformation, though they must be balanced against free expression concerns. A series of letters from New York AG Letitia James to several social media sites on Thursday exemplifies how U.S. officials may try to walk that line.

When the second property is paid off, you can then pull equity out of that one, and so on. "You'd just live off of the money that pull out of your properties if you work really hard for 15 years."

Orin FleurimontThe importance of direct-to-consumer offerings for music artists has never been more evident. The tides of history sand down complex events to smooth, shiny baubles, and the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom — whose 60th anniversary arrives Monday, Aug. 28 — is no exception. This oversimplification of history is at work not only with respect to Martin Luther King’s historic speech, which decried persistent Black poverty before dreaming of racial harmony, but also that of John Lewis, at 23 the march’s youngest speaker. Anointed a veritable saint before his death in 2020, Lewis was regarded back then as an enfant terrible fronting a headstrong new generation of rebels. Neither caricature quite captures the principled yet pragmatic Lewis, whose 1963 speech bluntly assailed deficiencies in the civil rights bill others were championing — but who succeeded in doing so without undermining the day’s unity. Striking such a delicate balance remains a challenge and an imperative for protest movements pushing for social change today.

David Greene says Alabama, Southern Georgia, and Northern Florida are ripe markets for appreciation. I do think appreciation is likely to be experienced later because of the increasing population that's moving there," Greene said on the podcast. According to Census Bureau data compiled by the National Association of Realtors, Florida's population grew the most in absolute terms out of any US state in 2022, while Georgia grew the sixth-most and Alabama grew the ninth-most. Cities they found where the population grew above 6% last year include Ocala, Florida; Tallahassee, Florida; Savannah, Georgia; and Deltona, Florida. National Association of RealtorsData also shows that median home prices in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida are cheaper than the national median of $436,800.

He's still bullish on real-estate investing as a strategy to build wealth. But he's taking a buy-and-hold approach right now, and not taking out risky loans. It's hard to imagine anyone who hails the virtues of real-estate investing more than Brandon Turner. He again sang the praises of real-estate investing as a method for building generational wealth, and brushed off calls for a housing market crash that have grown louder since last year. But that's not to say Turner is particularly bullish on every investing approach right now.

As talk of a TikTok ban builds, the leading legislation with bipartisan support is the RESTRICT Act. Here's why the RESTRICT Act has some people so worried — and what the experts say might be a better approach. The type of data TikTok collects is similar to what Facebook or Twitter collect from its users. What would actually solve the concerns about the Chinese government getting US user data is comprehensive data privacy legislation, he and other experts said. "What we're saying is that if you're concerned about the Chinese government getting user data from TikTok," Greene said.
